Powerboat Training

RYA Powerboat Training (Members Only)

At SSSC we offer RYA accredited level 1 and level 2 powerboating courses, as well as a safety boat course tailored to our needs. These are only available to members and are heavily subsidised as we ask members who have completed the courses to support the running of the club by helping out on the rescue boats from time to time.

We are an RYA Recognised Training Centre and therefore have the facilities, equipment and team of qualified instructors who will follow the RYA syllabus to maximise the enjoyment and safety of powerboarting.

All our courses are a combination of classroom, onshore practical, and on-the-water sessions, and are delivered by qualified instructors in our wide range of powerboats. We have two 4.6m Highfield RIBs fitted with 40HP Honda Outboard engines and are fully equipped safety boats which are regularly used to support other club sailing activities. We also have a Honda T40 inflatable. This is a rigid floor, soft bottom inflatable with a Honda 20Hp tiller steer engine. This shaped bottom boat has a good turn of speed and turning capability. It has plenty of space inside but is not intended as a safety boat, however it has sufficient equipment on board if needed to assist. Finally we have an 18ft Plymouth Pilot named Pontius. This displacement craft is the Committee boat and has an inboard 12HP diesel engine.

RYA Level 1 - Start Powerboating

The aim of Power Boat Level 1 is to provide a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, mooring, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. The course is conducted in both planing and displacement boats and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. A one day introduction to Powerboating with no previous experience required.

RYA Level 2 - Powerboat Handling

The aim of Powerboat Level 2 is to provide the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver through teaching boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. It will be conducted in both planing and displacement boats. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place. A two day course, no previous experience is required however Powerboat Level 1 would be advantageous.

SSSC Specific Safety Boat Course

The aim of Safety Boat Course is to equip trained powerboat users with the specific knowledge, skills and techniques required to perform the activities likely to be encountered whilst providing safety cover for sailing and other water activities and supporting the OOD during race days at SSSC. It is a 2 day SSSC course and builds upon the skills and knowledge gained at RYA PB Level 2.
