Lark Fleet
Message from the Fleet Captain - Tony Hotchkiss
Are we really half way through the season already? With the sun shining and weed in the pool the answer has to be a definite yes!! So what have been the highlights? Well the sight of Mike Owen in his bright red Lark has got to be one of them!
The training day in May proved both popular and highly effective. Those that attended certainly took a leap up the fleet the following day. Can they maintain it?
Undoubtedly the highlight of the year so far was the New Quay weekend. As a club event this has become more and more popular and it was great to see most of the Lark fleet attended, even if it was not in a Lark! For a change the conditions were almost ideal. (Almost!!!) Sunshine on both days, a freshening breeze during the first race gave way to large seas and strong winds making the sailing very challenging for the start of the afternoon race. About half the fleet ventured out and many of those took a dip before the ood decided the race just couldn't be run.
Fortunately Sunday morning saw a flat sea and moderate winds so that everyone could enjoy the days sail. Perhaps Ed & Chris would have prefered a little more wind for the Fireball, but otherwise great sailing conditions were enjoyed by all. The only thing missing was the company of the Dolphins that usually play amongst the fleet.
Mike Senior & Liz in their GP did rather show us all the way round but after that the Lark fleet got a good look in. John & Sue performed well as usual, with Mike Moscardi & Tracy Hitch showing he has lost none of his cunning or boat speed when the conditions are right! Thanks to the support from patient Katie Pyle even I showed some boat speed from time to time, even though I found the Red Devil (Mike Owen) catching up fast on Sunday morning. So all in all a great weekend of sailing. I think there were 11 or 12 Larks which is more than attend many Open Meetings these days, from a total of 31 South Staffs boats that made the journey!
Lark Sailing at the club.
Class racing goes from strength to strength, with good competition throughout the fleet. As with all classes at the club, class racing is organised for every Sunday afternoon (unless there is an Open Meeting) and with strong competition in the other fleets, even the PY races give plenty of challenges.
We will be organising training events during the year so watch this space for information on all Lark sailing. I hope you have a great season and above all that you continue to enjoy you sailing both at the club and at events you choose to go to.
If you want to try a LARK just speak to me to arrange a test drive!
For any further information on the class ask me or any of the LARK sailors as I know they will be pleased to share their enthusiasm.
