SSSC Juniors Invited to Iconic RYA Regatta
South Staffs Race Squad Sailors Jack Hodgkins and Olly Hateley along with over 270 other young sailors have been invited to race in five dinghy classes, Optimist, Topper, RS Tera (sport rig), Laser and RS Feva, as well as four windsurfing classes), at the RYA Eric Twiname Championships, one of the premier events on the junior racing calendar.
The iconic regatta, now in its 33rd year is hosted by Rutland Sailing Club in conjunction with the Eric Twiname Trust between 4-6th May, is named in memory of legendary sailor, author and journalist Eric Twiname, and is regarded by many young racers as a rite of passage as they continue their journey to become top-level racers.
After a winter of training and preparation for the annual ‘Battle of the Zones’ in their respective Zones and Home Countries. The sailors, aged between 10 and 16, hail from the RYA’s six English Zones, and home Countries Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and are individually invited to attend the event and represent the very best in regional talent, for some this is the first time they will race on a national scale. As the event is jointly funded by the RYA and the Eric Twiname Trust there is no entry fees for the sailors.
Chris Atherton, Event Director and RYA Senior High Performance Manager: “The RYA Eric Twiname Championships is always a brilliant event which sailors really look forward to. By bringing the best young sailors from across the country together it is a great opportunity for them to put their skills to the test against their peers and to compete for the coveted Eric Twiname Junior Championships title.”
“The high standard of sailing these young sailors demonstrate never ceases to amaze me – and there is year-on-year improvement in each of the represented RYA junior recognised classes.”
Congratulations Jack & Olly and good luck..!
