Learn to Sail: RYA Levels 1 & 2
South Staffs Sailing Club is an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Approved Training Centre. We run two RYA Learn to Sail courses for adults per year, which are internationally recognized. The courses are suitable for adults of all ages and levels of fitness, and give a basic knowledge of sailing and the capability to sail a dinghy in light winds without an instructor. Sailing is a relatively cheap sport to take up and you don’t need any special equipment to get started just comfy clothes, soft soled shoes and a sense of adventure!
Interest is always high in these courses, please see the details below or contact Mark Fleming for more information.

The level 1 and 2 courses are aimed at both members and prospective members. There are two courses running throughout the year with the first course starting on Wednesday 24th April and running for 10 consecutive Wednesdays (with a one week break for May half term) and another across four consecutive Saturdays starting on Saturday 15th June. The level 1 and level 2 courses follow a syllabus set out by the RYA. Following the completion of the courses, there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the rest of the year for you all to practise your new skills on the water, especially on Sundays which is the clubs main sailing day.
The capsize drill is an essential part of the course and will take place on the fifth Wednesday of the level 1 sessions. For the second course, the capsize drill will take place on the second day of the course. It is a good idea to beg or borrow a wet suit for this occasion but is not essential as the water is usually relatively warm and time in the water is kept to a minimum.
If you would like to take part in this exciting sport we would be very pleased to be able to help you.
