TV or no TV ?

What is your view on having a TV license at the Club?
A sensitive subject, but I thought at least we can use this forum to get views ?
Many sailing clubs we visit do have TV's and some even pay for channels to encourage social visitors. This can detract from the main reason for being at the club and may even put some people off from being at the club ? TV free Sundays are an attractive option !

My view is that a TV should ONLY be allowed for major sporting events (if on Free-to-view stations) that are linked to a social event to ensure attendance and increased revenue e.g. International & World Cup Matches, Olympics, Rugby etc.
BUT how would it be controlled - is it worth it - I am not sure ?

If (a big if...) England got to the football World Cup Final on the 11th July this year, Commodore's day could turn into an all day and all night event !
(would it add or detract to the day ?)

Any views on the Pros and Cons ?

In general terms then I think the idea of a TV at the club for general viewing is not a great idea.

I enjoy the TV free time and have no interest in catching up with the soaps at the club.

However for one off sporting events - like the World Cup, rugby or even the odd tennis game - then I think it would be good thing and would vote Yes. Only problem there might be is who would decide when the telly should be on or off?

I would suggest that if the club got a license then the committee / social sec could decide if it would be appropriate or not.

(Donald is my middle name if anyone wondered - thanks Neil - Shouldn't you be working instead of posting things on here - I am just sending your boss the link!)

I have thought about this, and for a special occasion it would be good, but ( and it’s a big but, OK it balances the boat!) I think generally we will end up like a Working Men's Club, with the TV flickering away in the corner and one or two watching it. I think any control over having it on/off would soon get diluted. I suppose if we want to watch England win the world cup (another delusion) we could hire a set for the day, and make a night of it, sounds fun.

Julie, you have a really strange middle name!

I agree with the I'm not sure it's worth it argument. The current TV at the club is good for it's job, playing the odd training/sailing DVD. I don't think many serious sporting fans would be persuaded to watch an International Football match on it in preference to the equipment they have at home.

Even if they were is the cost of an aerial/reciever and tv licence (currently £142.50 per year) going to be covered by the increased revenue generated by the few people who would otherwise have stayed away from the club to watch the TV?

I can recall a visitor at an open meeting in the past wanting to watch the rugby, he was more than happy to accept a lift to the local pub where he watched in the company of other supporters, rather than on his own in the corner of the sailing club interupted by the noise of everyone else enjoying a social evening.

It would be great to hear from members who've been put off coming to the club because there is no TV.
